A Folio of Loose Photogravures of Bali by Weissenborn
Th. Weissenborn was the first major female photographer of the Indies, who owned a rather famous atelier: "Studio Lux" in Garoet (address: Sociëteitsstraat 15) 1920 - 1940. Her photographs are rather romantic, the islands as a wish fulfilment. She was born in 1889 in Kediri, East Java, of German born, naturalized Dutch parents who owned a coffee plantation. One elder sister had studied photography in Paris and set up a studio in Den Haag by the time Tilly was fourteen. Tilly worked in the studio of Kurkdjian in Surabaya in 1917 among 30 other employees. In 1920 she set up her own studio in Garoet "Lux", From that time onward, she began to mark her work with a lyrical quality.
