About Festivalland
I have photographed the festival culture focusing on the landscape,
with and without people, so during and after the festival, as much as possible from the same viewpoint.
At a festival I feel at home, my hippie mother took me to my first in 1970. Later on I participated as a music lover and very often I have photographed at music festivals. I have done this since 1992, in line with my nightlife photography since the late 80s.
That I had to do something with festivals as a photographic subject-matter, was clear to me. The Netherlands handles more than 700 festivals and turned into a festival country. The nightlife has gained a well-developed division.
I find it fascinating and impressive how people come together with hundreds or thousands to experience music and to party. They have left the nightclubs for partying outside during daytime.
In my photography I had always addressed people, now I let the environment play a major role. Photographing the festival landscapes is a way to show the human lure of the culturally determined unity with nature. I also photographed portraits of the visitors.
And I simply wanted to know what the surroundings would look like without the people, the tents, the music and all the activity of the festivals.
The landscape without endeavours to be a Festival of the Elements on its own with upcoming sun, the mist and rain as its effects. The visitors are three bunnies, dogwalkers and some nudist.
There is a tradition in paintings of the Golden Age of (festival) landscapes. Initially the creation of God was depicted. Afterwards the landscape is a subject in itself and man is getting a different and bigger role, also by the position therein.

Het begon op Lowlands, zo’n vier jaar geleden. Fotograaf Cleo Campert liep tussen 55.000 anderen over het festivalterrein en vroeg zich opeens af hoe de omgeving eruit zou zien zonder festivalgangers, hekken, tenten en bands. Ze besloot het idee uit te werken tot een fotoserie, Festivalland. Deze donderdag wordt het resulterende boek gepresenteerd.
In de zomer van 2015 bezocht Campert twintig verschillende festivals, verspreid door heel Nederland. In de maanden daarna ging ze terug en probeerde ze de foto’s te reproduceren. In plaats van de hectiek van de festivals was alleen leegte over.
Cleo Campert legt uit hoe ‘Festivalland’ is ontstaan:
Op zo’n leeg terrein is alles anders. Er zijn geen hekken meer, er is geen entree.
Toch bleken de vele indrukken van het festival ook op het lege terrein nog gemakkelijk voor de geest te halen, vertelt Campert: „Ik moest het festival weer voor me zien om te kunnen bepalen waar ik precies naartoe moest. Op zo’n leeg terrein is alles anders. Er zijn geen hekken meer, er is geen entree. Aan de hand van ijkpunten als bomen en de ligging van een meertje kon ik het festival weer terughalen.”
Terwijl in haar hoofd het festival weer tot leven kwam, was er op de terreinen haast niemand te bekennen. Een paar konijnen, mensen die hun hond uitlaten. Zelfs: een nudist in het Amsterdamse Gaasperpark.
Campert fotografeerde jarenlang het Amsterdamse nachtleven; tussen 1989 en 1993 was ze huisfotograaf van de beroemde club RoXy. Landschappen fotograferen was nieuw voor haar, al helemaal in de vroege ochtend. Natuur is meer iets voor op vakantie, vindt ze. „Bovendien is de natuur in Nederland helemaal niet zo natuurlijk. Veel festivals worden gehouden in van die aangelegde recreatiegebieden. Die zijn ook prachtig, maar je komt er dus wel gewoon prullenbakken tegen.”
Juist voor festivalgangers kan terugkeren naar het festivalterrein een bijzondere ervaring zijn, vindt Campert. „Als mensen eraan toe zijn om echte leegte te ervaren, zouden ze zeker naar die plekken moeten gaan!”
