Considered by many to be Avedon's best work, and not without reason. In the American West was a 6-year project that culminated in the exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas, and portrayed blue collar westerners in eighties America- ranch workers, roustabouts, bar girls, drifters, and gamblers. "Beginning in the spring of 1979, I spent the summer months traveling in the West, going to truck stops, stockyards walking through the crowds at a fair, looking for faces I wanted to photograph. The structure of the project was clear to me almost from the start and each new portrait had to find its place in that structure. As the work progressed, the portraits themselves began to reveal connections of all kinds- psychological, sociological, physical, familial- among people who had never met.".

Katholieke Illustratie verschijnt vanaf 1867 om de katholieke gezinnen een 'eigen' weekblad te verschaffen met een opvoedende functie, als tegenwicht tegen de 'goddeloze' areligieuze pers van die dagen. Het bevat veel artikelen over katholieke onderwerpen, zoals heiligenverhalen en katholieke politiek, maar heeft ook aandacht voor cultuur, wetenschap, belletrie en nieuws. De afgebeelde voorpagina is gewijd aan de poging van de Zweden Andree, Strindberg en Fraenkel om per luchtballon als eersten de Noordpool te bereiken. Bij de start verongelukt de ballon bijna, en de verslaggever betwijfelt of er ooit nog wel iets van de expeditie vernomen zal worden. Inderdaad zal niemand de poolreizigers nog levend zien. Hun lijken worden pas meer dan dertig jaar later gevonden. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verliezen de kerken gaandeweg aan invloed en aanhang, en blijken confessionele massabladen zoals Katholieke Illustratie niet meer levensvatbaar. Het katholieke karakter van het blad wordt steeds zwakker, totdat het in 1968 opgaat in Nieuwe Revu. God verdwijnt, het bloot verschijnt... (HM)
